  • Q1. What’s Antrodia Cinnamomea?

Antrodia Cinnamomea, known as Antrodia Camphoratus, Taiwanofungus camphoratus, also called “Niu-chang-Chih” or “Niu-chang-ku”, “fungi of God” in common name. It is a valuable fungus species belongs to Antrodia / Polyporaceae, traditionally used for medical purposes only appeared in Taiwan.

In general, this valuable fungus species were parasitic on the heartwood of stout camphor (Cinnamomum kanehirea), a Taiwan endemic tree as well, that grow between altitude of 450 meters to 2000 meters.

Due to its outstanding effects, but with low growth, special growing conditions, and hard to be cultured, the wild Antrodia Cinnamomea was getting rare. Even be treated as Treasure of Taiwan.

  • Q2. What are the origins of Antrodia Cinnamomea?

In the early period of Taiwan’s recovery, Taiwan's aboriginal habits and customs related to food culture were often accompanied by wine, which often led to such physical problems as hangovers, hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer, and other liver diseases. The aborigines happened to discover that the wild Antrodia Cinnamomea that grows on stout camphor had a miraculous effect on treating hangovers and liver diseases. As a result, the aboriginal community has also nicknamed Antrodia Cinnamomea the "elixir", "secret formula", "ruby of the forest", and "king of ganoderma". Since Antrodia Cinnamomea has also shown great power in treating chronic diseases, it has been gradually accepted as a folk remedy among Chinese communities.

Antrodia Cinnamomea is treated as an antidote, has good curing effects for food poisoning, diarrhea, vomit, or pesticides intoxication. In past years, the Taiwanese aborigines or workers for Forestry Bureau would keep some Antrodia Cinnamomea in hand for accidental food poisoning, to help themselves and others whenever needed.

  • Q4. Major component of Antrodia Cinnamomea: Triterpenoids

A large number of experiments and national fungal research experts have proven that triterpenes are both chemical substances and core pharmacological ingredients of medicinal fungi and can be found in medicinal fungi plants with strong physiological activity.

Clinical medical trials have proven that as the effective volume gets higher and variety gets wider (indicating that the components have become even more complete), triterpenoid compounds can inhibit cancer cell proliferation, induce cancer cell apoptosis, prevent potential inflammation, relieve physical pain, regulate lymphocyte activities, and reduce free radical production, among other pharmacological effects. Furthermore, it can effectively protect the liver, promote liver cell regeneration, repair and enhance liver function, and reduce patient's liver and kidney damage during the chemotherapy period.

  • Q6. Main Component of Antrodia Cinnamomea – Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)

Also known as orgotein, superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an active substance derived from the living body that can eliminate harmful substances generated from the metabolic process of living organisms. By continuously supplementing the human body with SOD, certain anti-aging effects can be achieved. Ever since superoxide dismutase (SOD) was first isolated from red blood cells by Marn et al. in 1938, humans have spent more than the past 70 years being devoted to the scientific research of SOD. In 1969, McCord et Al. rediscovered this type of protein and determined its biological activity after clarifying its characteristics in boosting superoxide anions to activate disproportionation reactions. As a result, the chemical substance was later renamed superoxide dismutase.

Antrodia Cinnamomea is rich in SOD, which is a natural superoxide radical scavenger in the body that can help convert harmful superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide. Although hydrogen peroxide is still harmful to living organisms, catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD), which are highly active in the body, can be immediately broken down into completely harmless water. In this way, the three enzymes will form a complete oxygen chain.

Preventing Chronic Diseases and Their Complications
Scientists recently discovered "Free Radicals" to be the main culprit of different kinds of chronic diseases and aging problems. Therefore, it can be considered "the source of all diseases" or “the human body's greatest enemy”. The adverse effects that free radicals exert on our body is cumulative, including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, developing good habits of getting plenty of antioxidants can help keep the threat of chronic diseases away.

    Eliminating Chemotherapy's Side Effects
Cancer patients that undergo chemotherapy often experience a significant reduction in their bodies' antioxidant capacities. Once their antioxidant capacities drop to a certain level, free radicals will start damaging the body’s cells, mucous membranes, internal organs, brain, central nervous system, and so on. Therefore, cancer patients must quickly supplement enough antioxidants to maintain good physical condition. The Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare (MHLW) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) also recommend the use of antioxidants to prevent diseases caused by oxygen free radicals during the course of cancer or its treatment, further reducing such physical symptoms as vomiting, loss of appetite, hair loss, and other side effects due to anti-cancer drugs.

    Avoid Secondary Surgery Injuries
Since a significant number of free radicals are generated from surgery, it is recommended that patients take oral antioxidants before and after surgery to regain their physical condition and accelerate wound healing.

  • Q7. Major Component of Antrodia Cinnamomea – Adenosine

Adenosine is a nucleoside composed of ribose (ribofuranose); it is a part of adenine, whose middle is connected by β-N9-glycosidic bond.

Adenosine plays an important role in biochemistry, including energy transfer in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) or adenosine diphosphate (ADP) or signal transmission in the form of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Furthermore, adenosine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that may improve one's sleep.

Adenosine is one of the main components of human genes and can inhibit platelet aggregation, prevent blood clots caused by thrombosis, and improve blood circulation, which significantly improves blood circulation in middle-aged to elderly people.

  • Q8. Antrodia cinnamomea vs Ganoderma

Since Antrodia cinnamomea resembles Ganoderma in both appearance and growth environment, it used to be considered a type of Ganoderma. According to “Shennong Bencaojing”, a famous Chinese book on agricultural and medicinal plants, Ganoderma is categorized in the highest class of the three herbal medicine classes: top herbal medicine, medium herbal medicine, and poor herbal medicine. Antrodia cinnamomea has traditionally been served as an edible food in Taiwan for more than 200 years, both its domestic popularity and therapeutic effect are better than those of Ganoderma. Therefore, Antrodia cinnamomea has been nicknamed the “King of Ganoderma”.

    “Antrodia Cinnamomea” vs “Ganoderma”

Antrodia cinnamomea has no impurities like fatty acid, it can boast the most distinguished medical effects.

  • Q10. "Adverse Reaction" after Taking Antrodia cinnamomea

With general food therapy, patient's bodies often exhibit abnormal symptoms due to gradual physical improvement. Such a phenomenon is generally known as an improvement reaction or adverse reaction. Adverse reaction is largely associated with the detoxification of a patient's body. Those with special physiologies are more prone to adverse reaction. Since the liver's detoxification phenomenon only lasts one to five days, if the adverse reaction lasts too long, make sure to stop taking the pill and seek professional medical advice immediately.

  • Q11. What is the meaning of adverse reaction?

Adverse reaction is a Chinese ways that equals to healing crisis. In simple words it means some symptoms revealed that the decease were been gradually cured. American called it “Positive Cleansing Effect”

The ancient Chinese book of documents notes that, "Drugs won’t cure patients' disease unless it makes them feel any reaction in the first place". Literally, the word adverse can be reinterpreted as a faint in mind and obscured vision. Such words were often used in traditional Chinese medicine books to tell patients that after regulating their bodies through medicine, diet, manipulation, massage, or Qigong, the patients would not experience full recovery unless first experiencing a certain adverse reaction. Therefore, adverse reaction is sometimes referred to as improvement reaction.

However, from the modern western medical point of view, people often consider the adverse reaction of Chinese medicine to be the same thing as a side effect of western medicine; this is inaccurate and is caused by an insufficient knowledge of Chinese Medicine. The so-called side effect often finds its way into organs other than the pharmaceutically targeted organs. For example, drugs for onychomycosis often damage the kidney and liver, radioactive therapy often leads to hair loss, and steroid treatment of asthma often leads to osteoporosis.

In the field of Chinese medicine, "adverse reaction" is also known as "improvement reaction" or "detoxification reaction", indicating a response made by the pharmaceutically targeted organ. For example, with a long-term skin disease, since most skin fades and dies without treatment, patients don’t feel irritation or pain. However, with effective treatment, patients would feel pain and irritation as skin cells gradually grow back and some bacteria are gradually dying. Therefore, the "improvement reaction" indicated by Chinese Medicine is significantly different from the "side effects" indicated by Western Medicine.

In the field of Chinese medicine, a adverse reaction is not a warning given out by a medical prescription but rather an indicator that the patient is receiving the right medication. All the patient has to do is bear the pain for a while or to temporarily take a pain killer temporarily, instead of losing the great chance for physical improvement due to irrational fear. Since the human body is its own best doctor, inhibition and channeling are the two main ways for a patient's body to improve. Although inhibition can almost always slow down the symptoms immediately (which is favorable for most modern people), a larger amount of acidosis accumulates in the human body, which may lead to different kinds of modern diseases.

Chinese medicine stressed that, "If the veins are expedited, people feel no pain. Otherwise, they feel it." "Inhibition" drugs block all sorts of detoxification channels in the human body, which can result in even more diseases. Since most modern people are already accustomed to this treatment method and greatly identify with it, they continue to use inhibiting drugs to suppress their physical symptoms. Poisonous substances from these inhibiting drugs thus remain in such patients' bodies, causing great threat to their physical health.

Therefore, the best way to achieve "real improvement" in health is to use the channeling method to allow the body to perform voluntary detoxification. As long as the toxins are eliminated, health will follow. Adverse reaction is a temporary phenomenon that grows stronger when the body has lesions, which is the first sign of improvement. At this point, all the consumer has to do is gain more confidence and continue with the medical treatment. After some time, the adverse reaction will fade or disappear altogether as the patient's body gradually recovers.

  • Q13. The four types of adverse reactions are described below:

    • Relaxation Reaction: laziness, drowsiness, exhaustion, dizziness, etc.
The relaxation reaction often stabilizes after approximately one week. Due to cell activation and regeneration reaction, activation of the cell function may result in a temporal imbalance of the internal organs.
    • Allergic Reaction: constipation, diarrhea, sweating, swelling, pain, etc.
In a chronic disease, the affected part may react to the natural body recovery capacity for approximately two weeks.
    • Excretion Reaction: eczema, pustules, itching, eye boogers, large amount of feces, etc.
The excretion reaction results from the enzyme's function in detoxification and excretion, breaking down poisonous and toxic substances stored up in the patient's body and excreting such wastes through urination, excretion, or sweating.
    • Recovery reaction: stomach, abdominal pain, nausea, fever, palpitations, etc.
Due to disease improvement or lesion damage resulting from cell enhancement and detoxification reaction, some elements, such as viruses, toxins, and impurities, can get into the blood. Through cell's purification reaction, the blood circulation system can be purified once again to restore patient's health.

  • Q14. Entire Recovery Process of the Adverse Reaction

    1. Nutritional Supplement Period
This is the initial reaction. With a balanced nutritional supply in the human body, overall physical functions are further adjusted to facilitate smooth metabolism in the human body. Improved physical conditions in this stage include mental improvement, physical enhancement, fatigue elimination, and facial & skin color improvement. Some people even exhibit excitement or insomnia without the physical symptoms of exhaustion or dizziness.

    2. Metabolic Detoxification Period
Due to several factors, including overeating, lack of exercise, incomplete excretion, significant stress, and drug abuse, some poisonous substances may accumulate in human bodies, especially in detoxification organs like the liver and kidney. Under self-healing regulatory conditions, cumulative toxic substances may not only lead to chronic disease but may also result in the formulation of free radicals. According to a study report conducted by Dr. Robert A. Floyd of the Medical Research Center at Oklahoma City University, if the body produces too many free radicals, some harmful substances that lead to cancer, aging, stroke, and cardiovascular disease may be generated.
Dr. Niwa, director of the Institute of Immunology in Japan, inferred that excessive free radicals are the main cause of wrinkles, spots, freckles, senile plaque, and early aging, and are closely related to organ failure. Therefore, Dr. Niwa has been devoted to the study of free radicals. The results of the study have received great recognition and appraisal from the global community, and its clinical reports have also been published in internationally renowned medical journals.
As previously mentioned, toxins are the main culprit of chronic diseases. Long-term accumulation of toxins in the liver can lead to cirrhosis sputum or fatty liver, while long-term accumulation of toxins in the chest may lead to sputum, wheezing, hardening of arteries, increased blood pressure, vascular rupture, or cerebral hemorrhage.
Some toxins may cause stones. If a stone stays in the uterus, it can become uterine fibroids, or worse, transform into cancer. Detoxification is an important part of curing diseases. In general, people take medicine to reduce their physical symptoms. However, diseases may also manifest in other ways. In order to recover from illness without medication, food therapy and the natural healing power of the human body must both work together to facilitate the excretion of internal viruses, free radicals, and lipid peroxidation.
Henry G. Bioler, a well-known American food therapist, once said, "I have abandoned drugs because I understand the ancient medical principles. Nature always make use of our body's inborn immune system to achieve the real treatment effect." He revealed that toxins that reside in the blood circulation system can damage the filter apparatus and excretion organs like the intestines, liver, kidney, skin, etc. These toxins are culprits that result in all kinds of diseases. Therefore, all toxins must be eliminated so that our bodies can fully recover.
In order to eliminate acid metabolites and toxins while transforming human body fluids from acidic to weak alkaline (PH=7.35-7.45), common physical symptoms include frequent defecation, thick urine, itchy skin, sputum, cough, and irascibility. Some patients even exhibit such symptoms as sore throat, aphonia, and runny nose. Women with menstrual metabolic disorder may exhibit a longer menstrual period and a greater amount of menstrual blood. Only a few exhibit the abnormal phenomenon of menstrual stoppage.

    3. Great Blood Circulation and Manifestation of Soreness and Pain ("If the veins are expedited, people feel no pain. Otherwise, they feel it.")
When foods are supplemented to a point where the blood circulation system becomes smooth, patients may exhibit physical symptoms of soreness and pain, where the arteries were originally blocked or bruised. Those who initially feel soreness and pain will feel even worse despite taking pain killers. Such soreness and pain can last for several days before naturally fading away.

    4. Cell Regeneration and Mental Exhaustion (cell nutrition perspective)
Through the human body's natural healing power, dead or damaged body cells are further regenerated to achieve the best nutritional food effect. Since large amounts of nutrition and oxygen are delivered to reproduce the body cells, patients may often feel either exhausted or tired.

The abovementioned four health conditions are natural physical responses to food therapy, which is commonly known as the "dizzy reaction or improvement reaction."
